Staff Members Return to Sparks Middle School Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

Some staff members returned to Sparks Middle School on Wednesday. Some could be seen hugging each other outside the school before heading inside.

Many staff members are speaking to counselors and are now preparing for classes to resume on Monday.

The Washoe County School District is inviting Sparks Middle School students to start returning to the school on Thursday.

The school had been closed since early Monday morning when police say a 12-year-old boy fatally shot math teacher Michael Landsberry and injured two other students.

To help the community heal, several vigils, community prayers and fundraisers are being held in the coming week.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Wednesday at 7pm in front of Sparks Middle School at 2275 18th Street. The Patriot Guard and various veteran groups will participate in an honor guard.

The African American Clergy Council of Northern Nevada will hold a special prayer vigil Wednesday at 6pm at the Second Baptist Church of Reno at 1265 Montello Street. For more information, call 775-786-1017.

The Sparks Nazarene Church will hold a community prayer this Thursday night at 6:30 pm at 2200 El Rancho Drive.

The City of Sparks along with the Washoe County School District will hold a public candlelight vigil at 6pm at the Sparks Marina at the peninsula on the west side. The lighting of floating and handheld candles wil begin around sunset. There is a limited supply of candles. Participants are encouraged to bring their own. Parking is also limited around the Marina. As an alternative, parking is available at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Sparks Christian Fellowship is holding a service called 'Dealing with Tragedy and Where God Is In the Midst of it' at its 510 Greenbrae Drive location Sunday at 9am and 11am. The church will also accept donations for the victims' families.

Landsberry was a member of the Nevada Air National Guard and a Marine. McQueen High School and some military members will salute Landsberry this Thursday at the 7pm McQueen home football game. The tribute and salute will happen at halftime.

A fundraiser for Landsberry will be at Dad's Quick Mart at 5212 Sparks Blvd. Saturday at 10am. There will be a bake sale, car wash and a $5 raffle for $100 worth of gas. Proceeds will benefit the Compassion Fund.

The Heroes Memorial Foundation has created a Facebook Memorial Page for Michael Landsberry at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Remembering-Mr-Michael-Landsberry/767495089932653

They also have a webpage set up at http://heroesmemorial.org/content/master-sergeant-michael-landsberry

The City of Sparks, in conjunction with the WCSD, is planning a candlelight vigil at the Sparks Marina Friday night. Details will be announced as they become available.

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada is hosting a fund to provide financial support to the victims, students, staff, families, and Sparks Middle School in the wake of yesterday's shooting. This fund, The SMS Compassion Fund, is accepting tax-deductible monetary donations. Disbursements will be advised by representatives of the Washoe County School District and the City of Sparks under the oversight of the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, to assure the funds are distributed to meet the needs of the school community as they are identified.
