Expert Gives Tips on How to be Prepared During a Shooting

Monday morning's shooting at Sparks Middle School has many wondering what if this were to happen at their school.

Joey Walker runs "Leading Edge Threat Mitigation." He said shootings like the one that happened at Sparks Middle School Monday morning can't be prevented, but he teaches people how to be prepared if and when it does happen.

A tragedy like this from occurring, but what you can do is decrease the number of people from getting impacted by that tragedy.

Walker was a Reno Police Officer for 25 years before retiring in 2003. Now, he owns "Leading Edge Threat Mitigation" which uses some tactics that allow police officers to survive when dealing with a situation.

He wants to emphasize to always find a way to run and hide from a situation. But if you are confronted by a shooter face-to-face, he says to try to talk to him or her with a lower tone. And if you know the person, use their name and keep your body language calm.

If you can, get behind a covered area to talk to the shooter.

Walker also showed me a way to take a firearm away from a shooter.

"Your left hand is going to sweep across and move the weapon. Fingers down, just like that. Right hand comes underneath right about here, forcing this back toward me and pulling this back toward your shoulder, just like that. Now, you always want to point it in this direction this way because you don't know this individual's weapon."
