Students, Parents React to Shooting at Sparks Middle School

Posted: Updated:

We arrived at the scene early this morning, while students who witnessed the tragedy were still on the scene. We heard from everyone: "I can't believe it happened here." A young boy with a gun, breaking the peace and innocence of a day at a middle school. Alfrancis de Vera was just one of many who expected nothing more than a day of seeing friends and learning something new, when he saw a silver gun held by a classmate. De Vera told us, "He pointed to us, and he said, 'You ruined my life and now I'm going to ruin yours'."

Then the terrible sound of a gunshot. Classmate Adan Ramirez thought it was something else: "I thought it was just a joke. Then I saw people running. And I saw their faces, so serious, like it was no joke."

13-year-old Kyle Nucom recognized the shooter as a fellow student. He witnessed one shooting: "The student shot the teacher, the teacher fell, and we were running across the street to a lady's house. And as we were running we heard 4 to 5 more shots." Several students told us they ran inside the school. Kyle ran the other way. "My mind was just telling me to run and just try to find somewhere safe and just try to get away from the school."

Word spread. Parents received frantic phone calls from their kids. Lindsey Bishop told us her daughter, "called me from the parking lot of grocery outlet with her friend Clarisse letting me know that some child had brought a gun to school and shot a teacher and a couple of other students, and that they just ran."

Lindsey's told us her daughter is confused. "She was surprised he would do something like that, because normally she said he was always smiling and acted like he had no problems whatsoever." And upset…"She's in an uproar right now. She doesn't know what to think right now. She knows she just wants us to make sure her friends are safe right now, that's why we're waiting around."

As horrifying as the call from her daughter was, many who witnessed it were too traumatized to say much more about it. Adan Ramirez told us, "I thought that was going to be my last day. And…" He left with his head shaking.
