Details Released in Deputy-Involved Shooting at Reno Hospital

Posted: Updated:

The Sparks Police Department has released more details into last month's officer-involved shooting at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center.

Officers say a Washoe County deputy was guarding a hospitalized inmate when that unidentified inmate ran from his hospital room to a stairway leading down to the ground floor. The deputy ordered the inmate to stop several times, but a physical struggle later ensued inside the stairwell which continued down two flights of stairs.

When the inmate tried to get into an elevator, police say the deputy fired once at him hitting him in the leg. The inmate now faces additional charges relating to the escape attempt.

The inmate was taken into custody and treated for his injuries at Renown Regional Medical Center.

The deputy involved was treated for minor injuries and placed on routine paid administrative leave.

Upon completion, the investigation will be submitted to the district attorney's office for review.

Deputies say the inmate was originally in custody for several unnamed charges including one felony charge.
