A group of Veterans gathered on Sunday night for a candle light vigil to honor their friend and fellow veteran, Charles "Bob" Sperry,  who was killed during a bank robbery on Wednesday in south Reno.

80-year-old Charles Sperry was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a man during a bank robbery earlier this week.

When an armed robber entered the Bank of America near the Meadowood Mall, Sperry told him to leave and was fatally shot in the chest.

"Because he was a giving person" said friend Richard Schuster, "a person who would be there at personal sacrifice to himself for the good of another"

Friends say bravery was nothing new to Mr. Sperry, the 80 year old was a Marine and a Veteran of both the Vietnam and Korean Wars.  He was also a champion for local veterans

"Bob was a personal friend, a fellow Veteran and a beloved person to me, "  Said Richard Schuster " He was an example of a gentleman and an officer, but he was always a gentleman"

The man arrested for the robbery and the shooting, Van McDuffie, remains inside the Washoe County Jail charged with bank robbery with use of a dangerous weapon causing death.

Police say he was caught at a nearby bus stop shortly after fleeing the bank with the stolen money.

You can also donate money to Sperry's family at that bank, just ask to give to the Sperry Memorial Fund.
