Local Bank Robbery Victim Remembered

The man killed during a botched armed robbery in south Reno this week was known by many local veterans as someone who was always there to help. Bob Sperry was 80 years old. He was a Marine and a veteran of both the Vietnam and Korean wars. And he was a champion of local veterans.

"Bob has his own physical ailments, and yet he was here pushing others in wheelchairs in to see me to see if I could help them with claims," says Denise Estes with Veterans Services in south Reno.

In fact she says he brought her other veterans at least once a month for the past year. And she says he was known for standing up for others.

"They say the person was shot trying to protect someone else and that was exactly who Bob was," Estes said. "He was always watching out for the little person who couldn't stand up for himself. And if he saw someone who needed help he would have been the first to step up and say 'Knock it off!'"

Services for Bob Sperry are pending.

The man arrested for the armed robbery and the shooting, Van McDuffie, is charged with bank robbery with use of a dangerous weapon causing death.
