Nurses at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center Ratify Contract

Posted: Updated:

Nurses at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno have ratified a contract calling for a raise and lower health care premiums.

The pact will give some 500 registered nurses a 10% raise over its 2.5-year term as well as up to three paid days off to attend continuing education classes.

Nurses voted Tuesday and Wednesday to ratify the collective bargaining contract that they say protects patient care standards and provides a safer workplace for nurses.

It's the first contract that the National Nurses Organizing Committee-Nevada has negotiated with Saint Mary's since it was acquired by Prime Healthcare Services from Dignity Health in 2012.

The contract continues to require the hospital to meet minimum nurse-to-patient ratios and includes a process in which the ratios may be improved.

It also provides supplemental insurance protection for nurses who are victims of workplace violence or accidents stemming from needles or other sharp objects.  (AP)
