President Obama, Speaker Boehner Talk by Phone on Debt

Posted: Updated:

House Speaker John Boehner's office says the Ohio Republican spoke by phone with President Barack Obama Friday afternoon.

Spokesman Michael Steel said Obama and Boehner agreed "that we should all keep talking." But he said no additional details of their call would be released.

Obama met with Boehner and other GOP leaders at the White House on Thursday. Their staffs continued to talk into the night after the meeting on a possible deal to break their stalemate.

House Republicans are offering to pass legislation to avert a default and end the 11-day partial government shutdown as part of a framework that would include cuts in benefit programs.

Republicans are seeking changes in Obama's health care law.

Officials say House Republicans are offering to pass legislation to avert a default and end the partial government shutdown as part of a package that includes cuts in benefit programs.

Senior aides to Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor outlined the proposal at a late-night White House meeting Thursday with senior administration officials.

In addition to ending the shutdown and increasing the debt limit, the proposal includes an easing of the across-the-board spending cuts that began taking effect a year ago, and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed.

Among them is a plan to raise the cost of Medicare for better-off beneficiaries.

Obama met yesterday with House Republicans, after which the White House said "no specific determination was made."

The debt standoff is likely to be the prime topic when the 188-nation International Monetary Fund and the World Bank meet in Washington this weekend. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will represent the United States at the discussions. (AP)
