Sign Ups Begin for Evelyn Mount's Thanksgiving Meals

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday was the first day to sign up for a Thanksgiving meal from Evelyn Mount's Community Outreach Program, and the phones were ringing non-stop. "She said they started ringing at seven this morning," said LaTonda Baker, who is a volunteer with the program.

Evelyn Mount's living room is already buzzing with activity, as her community outreach effort gets underway for Thanksgiving and Christmas. "They've been calling for two weeks now and we just got to signing them up today," said Mount. Every year people line up to receive donations of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year, the calls to sign up are coming early.

"We have a wide variety of people that call. We have seniors that call, we have families that have ten in their family. It just depends. There's just so many people in need," said Baker. Donations are what keeps this program going year-after-year... since 1979.

Mount and her volunteers accept donations of turkeys, chickens and side dishes, and pass them out the week before Thanksgiving. "When it comes to canned goods, like the meats and things, the seniors just love it. The canned hams, the tuna," said Mount. She also accepts donations of gently used clothing to hand out to people in need.

Mount tries not to turn anyone away. "If they really need it, come and sign up for it and we'll pass it out to them," she said. She does require an identification and proof of residency, such as a power bill. To sign up for a Thanksgiving basket call 356-0238 or 359-0807.

To donate food or clothing for the Community Outreach program, you can drop it at any area Sak 'n Save or at Mount's home on 2530 Cannan Street in north Reno.
