4 People Arrested in Bar Fight

Posted: Updated:

From the Sparks Police Department

Saturday night just before 10 p.m. the Sparks Police Department received several 911 calls reporting gun shots fired in the 900 block of Victorian Avenue.  Officers from Sparks Police and several local law enforcement agencies responded to the area and were directed to the Alley Bar located at 906 Victorian Avenue.   Officers located several subjects kicking and punching a single subject (the victim) behind the bar.  A patron of the bar provided officers with a handgun that was taken from the subject (the victim) that was being attacked.

During the investigation it was determined that a verbal altercation began with approximately ten subjects and the individual (the victim) with the handgun.  The altercation began due to inappropriate conduct towards a female friend of the victim.  When the victim asked the individual to control his behavior the victim was immediately cornered by several subjects.  The victim exited the bar to avoid a confrontation and was followed by the group.  The victim displayed his handgun without pointing it directly at anyone, hoping to deter the subjects.  When the group continued to advance the victim fired a single shot into the air in further hopes of deterrence and believing someone would call 911.  The group continued to advance and the victim fled into the bar where he was pursued again by the same group.  The victim went behind the bar believing he would be safe but was further pursued and eventually attacked.  The victim fired another single gunshot while he was being kicked and punched on the floor of the bar.

Several independent witnesses confirmed the sequence of events as described by the victim which corroborated the use of a firearm in self-defense.  The victim never aimed the firearm at any of his attackers.  The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the scene.  The name of the victim is not being released at this time.

Four of the attackers were positively identified by the victim and witnesses and were each arrested for one count of simple battery and one count of provoking an assault, both misdemeanor charges.   The subjects arrested were identified as Stanley Griffin, Michael Griffin, Eric Cooper and Cody York, all from the Carson/Minden area.
