Local Groups Ask for Holiday Donations

Posted: Updated:

The need this holiday season is bigger than ever as local organizations are gearing up to serve those who are less fortunate.

One of them is local philanthropist Evelyn Mount who is asking for the community's help.

"The situation has gotten so stressful in the community," she said. "We're running behind, and I'm very stressed out about it because I've never been in this condition before."

She tells me more than 9,000 locals are asking for her help this season. The calls began in the first week of September, and she's been trying to keep up with the demand.

"I just hope that people just get the type of food to us that will serve them for Thanksgiving," she said. "Then, we start adding for Christmas, but right now, we're really worried about Thanksgiving because there's so many people."

She's accepting turkeys, hens, stuffing, cranberries, potatoes, bread, beans, etc.

Evelyn says more than 9,000 people have signed up for her Thanksgiving basket giveaway.

If you need help, you can call 356-0238 or 359-0807. Phone lines will be open from 10:30am-4pm Monday-Friday until the middle of November.

And for those of you who want to donate, you can drop off food at Evelyn's house at 2530 Cannan Street.
Or send checks to:

Meanwhile, other local groups have also been seeing an increased need this time of year.

"The weather is getting colder," said Auburn Harrison, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. "We obviously do have more people wanting to get inside, wanting warm food and wanting nourishment."

The non-profit helps people year-round with not just food and clothing, but other services like medical needs and housing.

"Our focus is helping the whole person trying to get people out of poverty and just on a better life track, in general," Harrison said.

They're busy putting on events during the holidays to feed families like its "Feeding Families" Holiday Food Drive on Wednesday, December 11th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its location on 500 East 4th Street, Reno. They're looking for frozen hams and turkeys, boxed stuffing mix, mashed potatoes mix, canned food (cranberry sauce, vegetables, fruit), breads, custard, puddings, desserts, and cash donations.

They appreciate each donation they receive from the community.

"The majority of it does come from just generous people in the community who give it to us with the hopes that we'll feed people," Harrison said.

For more information on donating to the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, call them at (775) 322-7073.
