Yosemite National Park Campers Turned Away

Posted: Updated:

Sixteen hours from Dubai to experience Yosemite National Park's breathtaking beauty.

One couple is forced out before enjoying park attractions.

"They stopped us and told us that we can't do anything," says Nisa Gour.

Chandra adds, "Surely we had to change our plans we were planning on seeing Glacier Point upper and lower Yosemite Falls,"

Yosemite is one of the 401 national parks closed thanks to the federal government shutdown.

Because a trio of highways run through parts of the park, main entrance gates remain open.

"Visitors can come in to the park if they are heading from point A to point B, no stopping, restrooms are closed, visitors centers are closed, things like that," says Scott Gediman.

Some visitors aren't letting road blocks at trailheads stop them from enjoying the national treasure.

"We just came back down and snuck in through the exit of tunnel view so we could look down the valley," says camper Karen Norman.

Campers unplugged from technology say getting information about when it's time to pack up and leave hasn't been easy.

"We tried to go to the website today for bus information; the website is down," says camper Josh Nafman.

The government shutdown furloughed more than 600 Yosemite employees.

October is a popular month for fall travelers - when an average of 10,000 people visit the park a day.

Once shut down ends, park staff will return and immediately open the park.
