Access to Healthcare Network Offers Lower Rates for Nevadans

Posted: Updated:

The Affordable Care Act requires every U.S. citizen to have health coverage by early 2014.

A local non-profit is working with local providers to offer coverage for low income Nevadans.

The Access to Healthcare Network is a non-profit, medical discount plan. Since its inception in 2007, AHN has served more than 260,000 Nevadans.

Monthly membership for a family of four costs $95. For a single adult it's $35.

"You do have to be a Nevada resident or work in the state of Nevada," said Chrissy Caufield, director of enrollment and eligibility for AHN. "They have to meet income guidelines and they have to go through an orientation and enrollment and then we assign them to a care coordinator once they are in our program."

Access to Healthcare asks providers, community members and businesses to all provide a little bit without charging Nevadans too much for coverage.

The first major provider to jump onboard was Saint Mary's.

I spoke with Donald Kowitz, president and CEO of Saint Mary's Health Plans. He said they teamed up with AHN because it meets all of the federal requirements and is a good way to help many out there who are living without coverage.

"I think it's going to provide insurance coverage for many people who can't afford it today. It's a combination of both government contribution for lower income people as well as a shared responsibility. There are requirements to pay premiums for virtually everyone in the program."
