Recent cases of child harassment and an attempted abduction in Sparks over the past few weeks have the community focused on teaching children to stay safe from strangers this week.
At Martial Arts on the Move, instructors teach children to watch their surroundings at all times and be alert if they see anything that makes them uncomfortable.
"All of us as parents need to join forces together to teach our kids that it's okay to say something that they don't have to worry about being rude or offending someone; we say don't be scared be prepared," says Denice Challender-Slater, owner/instructor of Martial Arts on the Move.
Some other important tips to teach children:
There will be a child safety fair this Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm at the Home Depot on Summit Ridge Court in Reno.
And then on Wednesday, Aikido of Reno on Wells Avenue will offer two free self-defense seminars on how to stay safe.
The first will be at 5 pm and is designed for children ages 6 to 11. Then the second class is at six for ages 12 and up- including adults.
