Nevada Volleyball Drops Two at Cougar Invitational

Nevada falls in three sets to Idaho

PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Nevada (2-8) volleyball team lost in three sets to Idaho (7-5) at the Cougar Invitational today.  The Wolf Pack lost by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-23 to fall to 2-8 on the season while the Vandals improved to 7-5.

Nevada trailed most of the first set before pulling even at 19.  UI outscored the Pack 6-2 the rest of the set to win 25-21.  The Pack hit .237 and Idaho .333.

Set two was tied at four but the Vandals outscored Nevada 21-13 the rest set to on the way to the 25-17 victory.  The Pack hit just .129 compared to .295 for UI.

There were seven ties and four lead changes in final set but the Vandals held on for the 25-23 victory to complete the sweep.  With the set tied at 22 UI scored three of the final points of the match to win.  Nevada had its best hitting set of the match at .257 while the Vandals hit .262.

Sam Willoughby led Nevada with a match-high 14 kills and hit .700.  Senior setter Dana Holt totaled 31 assists.  Kara Kasser and Grace Anxo reached double figures in digs with 13 and 10 respectively.

Katelyn Peterson totaled 13 kills and Alyssa Schultz finished with 10 for UI.  Setter Meredith Coba dished out 30 assists and topped the Vandals with eight digs.


Washington State defeats Nevada 3-1

PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Nevada (2-9) volleyball lost in four sets at Washington State (13-0) in the Cougar Invitational tonight.  The Cougars won the first two sets 25-8 and 25-19 while the Wolf Pack won the third set 25-20 before dropping the fourth 25-17.  The Pack stands at 2-9 on the season while WSU improved to 13-0.

Sophomore middle hitter Sam Willoughby was named to the all-tournament team after her play today.  Willoughby had seven kills and five blocks tonight after posting a match-high 14 kills in a 3-0 loss to Idaho earlier today.

WSU scored the first three points of tonight's first set and won easily 25-8.  Nevada hit negative .077 and the Cougars an impressive .565.

The second set featured 12 ties and five lead changes but WSU held on for the 25-19 victory to take 2-0 advantage in the match.  With the score tied at 14 the Cougars closed out the set with an 11-5 run.  Once again Nevada hit negative .077 and WSU dropped to .304.

Nevada scored the final five points of the third set to break a 20-20 tie and win the fourth set 25-20.  The Pack hit .241 and held WSU to a .125 attack percentage.  Willoughby and Tessa Lea`ea had three kills each in the set.

The Cougars did not trail in the final set scoring the first three points and won 25-17 to take the match 3-1.  The Pack hit zero set four and WSU .200.

Lea`ea led the Pack with 11 kills and Willoughby added seven.  Setter Taylor Rothfuss dished out 20 assists and Kara Kasser finished with 11 digs.

Kyra Holt and Ver'Leea Hardaway topped WSU with 13 and 10 kills respectively.  Camryn Irwin posted a match-high 33 assists and Kate Sommer a match-high 15 digs.

Both teams had nine blocks in the match.  Willoughby led the Pack with five blocks.  Nevada hit .026 in the match and WSU .264.

The Pack plays Seattle at 10 a.m. on Saturday to conclude play in the invitational.
