Dozens of Dads Become Watch D.O.G.S. at Virginia Palmer Elementary

Posted: Updated:

A local elementary school reached out to men who may be interested in taking a little time to become role models for area kids.

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a national program that several Washoe County schools are already using. One of them is Virginia Palmer Elementary School, and on Tuesday, around 90 dads, grandfathers and others came out to see what the program is all about -- to spend time with their kids and make a lasting impression on their lives, just by taking a day off.

"It's really an opportunity to have the dads here during the day, typically when they're not here," said Jason Childs, Virginia Palmer Elementary Principal.

Watch D.O.G.S. participants can spend at least a day at the school. They can work as little as an hour, up to the entire day, doing activities with the kids. The men can be in their children's classrooms, eat lunch with them and patrol the halls and keeping it safe.

"When you walk into that office with your child, they stand a little bit taller," said Dee Johnson of Washoe County School District Counseling & Education. "They have a grin from ear-to-ear, and they are so proud that you are there that day."

The program was something that appealed to a lot of the adults whose kids attend Virginia Palmer.

"I want to try to give everything I can for him," said Victor Flores. "That would be a good thing to do for him."

"It allows me to go in and spend time in the classroom, see the other kids, have lunch with him, and spend quality time at a school that really needs it," said Adam Hopkins, whose grandson, Matthew, is in the 3rd grade.
