Lyon Deputies Investigate Attempted Goat Theft

Posted: Updated:

From the Lyon County Sheriff's Office:

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the attempted theft and injury of a goat that occurred over Labor Day weekend in the Fernley area.

The incident started as a report to the Sheriff's Office, which was followed by several postings on Facebook, that were also reported by citizens in the area. The Sheriff's Office has received several witness statements identifying two out of three male juvenile suspects who are believed to be responsible for the attempted abduction and injury of a local Fernley goat.

The investigating deputy learned that while the suspect(s) were attempting to remove the goat from its pin, the goat reacted by resisting and possibly fighting back.  It is believed that the goat's actions prompted one of the suspect(s) to strike the goat with an unknown type of blunt object which fractured one of its goat's legs. The caretaker later found the goat with a fractured leg and its snout bound with athletic tape.  The investigating deputy believes the suspect(s) used the tape in an attempt to silence the goat after receiving the injuring blow to its leg.  The goat later received medical attention for its leg and is currently back with its original owner in Silver Springs, NV.  Until this investigation has been completed we are unable to comment on the intentions of the suspect(s) if they had been able to steal the goat.

The Sheriff's Office will be submitting charges on those involved for attempted larceny and cruelty to animals through the Lyon County Juvenile Probation Office and the Lyon County District Attorney's Office.  And at this time, the Sheriff's Office will not be releasing the names of any of the juvenile suspect(s) involved in this crime.
