2013 Reno Air Races Fly Off Into Horizon

Posted: Updated:

Reno Air Race officials are celebrating a successful 50th anniversary after the 2013 event concluded on Sunday afternoon.

The event brought out the die hard fans, but it also made fans of people this year's newcomers.

"It was something you should see if you've never done it," said John Knoerzer of Kingwood, Texas.

"I've been kind of around the field, and it was just very interesting to come watch as a spectator," said Leah Schneider of Sparks. "Enjoy it with my family."

Reno Air Racing Association C.E.O. and President, Mike Houghton, says attendance was up this year and that he's also happy with the official event merchandise sales.

"That's an indication of the attendance," he said. "We did real well."

Houghton says officials are already working on next year's event with the feedback they got this year.

"We're already talking to some folks about part of the air show, and talking to the racers about things they'd like to see changed," he said. "We're already off and running for 2014."

Steve Hinton of Chino, California took the Gold Championship in the Unlimited Classes in 2013. According to Air Race officials, this is Hinton's 5th win in Reno. This year, he flew the P-51 Mustang "Voodoo" for the first time.

"I was intrigued because "Voodoo" was a different challenge," Hinton said. "A new challenge. When I started flying Strega, the airplane had won several times. It was proven. "Voodoo" hadn't been in the winner's circle before."

And Hinton says being a young man himself, he wants to see more kids get into aviation.

"These are the future aviators, people that defend our country, people that race, people that do air shows," he said. "Whatever it is, we need to inspire future generations, our youngsters, to come into aviation."

The other big winners for 2013:

-Biplane: Tom Aberle, Fallbrook, CA, "Phantom"
-Sport: Jeff LaVelle, Mukilteo, WA, "Race 39"
-Formula One: Vito Wypraechtiger, Bern, Switzerland, "Scarlet Screamer"
-T-6: Dennis Buehn, Carson City, NV "Midnight Miss III"
-Jet: Pete Zaccagnino, Park City Utah, "Just Lucky"
