Local Syrian Reflects on Homeland, Obama Speech

Posted: Updated:

Ray Salaho has been calling Reno home for nearly 30 years now, but for 20 years he lived in Syria. And while most of his family has moved to Turkey, he still has two sisters and two brothers there. And he says life there is unbelievable.

"There is no power, there is no water, everything is too expensive and you can't find nothing, It's horrid!"

Salaho keeps in touch with his family via Facebook. And he says it's hard to comprehend the destruction he sees. He also says he has no doubt that President Asaad was behind the use of chemical weapons there.

"To use chemical weapons or weapons of mass destruction," he says, you need experts and facility and the proper protective gear. The rebels do not have anything like that. No way!"

And he says that while he is hopeful that a diplomatic option in Syria will help get his homeland back on the path to recovery, he is confused that President Obama's speech was so vague.

"It is hard to tell what he wants and how he will get it. I mean if diplomacy will work that would be wonderful but I can't say that it will."

Salaho says he is tired of the killing and hopes to see the rebels overthrow Asaad so that Syria will find a peaceful future.
