Fatalities Down 40% on Nevada Roads, but Far From Goal

Posted: Updated:

There have been 180 fatalities on Nevada roads this year.

While Nevada traffic fatalities have decreased nearly 40% the past seven years, the Nevada Department of Transportation tell us they are working hard to save more lives moving forward.

One way they are working to help educate people is through an annual traffic safety workshop.

The workshop brings together everybody associated with our roads, from transportation engineers, law enforcement to medical responders.

"You don't want anybody you know and love to die, so zero fatalities is a goal," said Traci Pearl with the Department of Traffic Safety. "It takes every single one of us that drives a vehicle to be responsible and drive safely."

Pearl said not wearing a seat belt, drinking and driving and talking on the cell phone are the main reasons people are crashing.

This workshop talks to drivers about those things and gives safety tips to help everybody behind the wheel.

Here are a few common sense safety tips to remember next time you are behind the wheel.

Don't follow to closely, give yourself space behind the car in front of you.

Leave early for wherever you are headed, then you won't be in a hurry and more susceptible to crashing.

Always use your blinker and obey the speed limit.
