From KTMB:

More than 600 volunteers are expected to line the Truckee River from Verdi to Lockwood on Sept. 28 for KTMB's Truckee River Cleanup Day. Residents who wish to volunteer, or learn more about KTMB's Truckee River Cleanup Day, can visit Last year, volunteers cleaned up 13 tons of trash and invasive weeds, and with this summer's heavy lineup of festivals and recreation along the river, that number is not likely to decrease.

But KTMB's Truckee River Cleanup Day isn't just about picking up trash.

"Education is key so we don't have to keep doing cleanups forever," said KTMB Executive Director Christi Cakiroglu. "People don't think much of it when they lose track of a soda bottle or beer can along the river, and they might not realize they are one of hundreds of people doing the same thing every day for months during the summer."

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful volunteers not only help pick up those bottles and cans, they become ambassadors for responsible recreation, weed abatement and runoff prevention in the community.

"Once you've seen the trash and pollution that ends up in the river, either from littering or lawn runoff, you can't ignore it anymore," said Cakiroglu. "You recognize which plants are invasive, and have to get rid of them, and start watering your lawn differently. The Truckee provides our drinking water, an incredible place to play with our kids, and great parks and venues drawing people from all over the country. We are so lucky to have this resource running right through town, and we have to take care of it."

This year, KTMB's Truckee River Cleanup Day will include storm-drain stenciling in partnership with the City of Reno. A number of sites are also designated for weed abatement. Because invasive weeds use more water than our native weeds and are more flammable, they are always a concern in wildfire-prone Northern Nevada.

KTMB's Truckee River Cleanup Day is sponsored by the Truckee River Fund, and coordinated in partnership with NV Energy, Waste Management Recycle America, Wells Fargo, YP, the cities of Reno and Sparks, Sun Valley General Improvement District, Washoe County, Washoe County Health District, Allied Nevada Gold, Barrick, IGT, REI, Signature Landscapes, and Whole Foods.
