Lyon County Gets $11.9M for Septic Tank Removals

Posted: Updated:

Lyon County has been awarded $11.9 million in federal grants and loans to build a sewer system for homes in the Dayton area and remove private septic tanks blamed for increased levels of nitrates in water supplies.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency includes a $6.9 million low interest loan and a $4.9 million grant.

Other funding is being provided by state, federal and local agencies for the $15 million project.

Homes in the Daytona Heights and Mark Twain neighborhoods are on individual septic tanks.

About 500 septic systems will be abandoned once the new sewer system is completed.

It will involve installation of more than 39,000 feet of main sewer lines and 71,000 feet of lateral lines.

"This infrastructure investment will protect the health of the Dayton community and shows how partnership efforts at the local, state and federal level can make a real difference," said USDA RD State Director Sarah Adler. "We applaud Lyon County for planning ahead and fixing a problem before it becomes an emergency."
