Winds Start to Push Rim Fire Smoke Away From Region

Posted: Updated:

The Rim Fire has made our air quality unbearable, but on Friday, a lot of people finally breathed some fresh air.

We talked with some folks out at the Sparks Marina. Like the rest of us, they said they are loving the cleaner air.

"It's fantastic out here," said Brandi Ziegler of Sparks. "You can actually see Mt. Rose. From my house, I haven't been able to see the Nugget. It's been nice to actually go out and see all the casinos and mountains."

Courtney Frunk of Reno let her baby play in the sunshine. "It's nice. I finally get to bring my little boy out here and run the marina. We haven't been able to in two weeks. He's loving it. He finally gets to go down his favorite slide."

Air quality is back in the moderate range here in the Truckee Meadows. That's a far cry from where it has been the past few weeks, since the Rim Fire started August 17th near Yosemite. It's currently 80% contained with full containment expected September 20th. On Thursday, Forest Service officials announced it started after a hunter allowed an illegal fire to spread. No arrests have been made, and officials haven't released the hunter's name.
