Inside The Joe, on the University of Nevada campus, students swing by the food court to fuel up for class. Unfortunately, some of the most popular items, like a bagel with cream cheese, are also some of the most unhealthy.

"I hate to burst the bubble but a bagel is about like a candy bar when it comes to being a good nutritional option. It's carbohydrates. It causes a big jolt and big boost in the serum blood sugar which is not good for us. And that leads to a rapid surge of insulin and hormones which leads to fat deposition, hunger and weight gain."

For lunch, Dr. Kent Sasse says the deli is a better choice than the Italian place.

"The wrap has a thin amount of carbohydrates. Still not the best but it's not bad at all really. And if you wrap up some vegetables and some protein, you've got some meat and some healthy vegetables that's not bad at all. On the pasta and Italian food you have to be careful there because pasta is once again one of those carbohydrates that's going to boost the blood sugar which is what we're trying to get away from."

Most people don't think of Chinese food as all that healthy but you're saying compared to the options, this isn't too bad.

"Not too bad. I think you can do pretty well here especially if you can pile up the plate with vegetables. That's the number one thing we should be eating. I like the look of that green broccoli there. If you could get that piled up on your plate. Some healthy nuts, some healthy meats. And even if it's deep fried, those are mostly fat calories. And in this day and age of diabetes and obesity are not the main culprit. What we're trying to get away from here is the carbs."
