Wild Horse Advocates, BLM to Work Together on Issues

Posted: Updated:

Wild horse advocates met with Bureau of Land Management representatives Wednesday at the Palomino Valley holding facility - and they may be coming closer to finding common ground.

Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva flew in to speak along with actress Wendie Malick at the BLM facility.

Both speakers urged advocates not to view the BLM as the enemy, but to look for solutions together.

"The BLM is doing the best job they can taking care of these horses, but many of these horses did not need to be rescued," says Malick.

Democrat Grijalva adds, "It's not a question of blame. It's a question of policy and a management strategy that has consistently failed."

Horse advocates are pushing for more shelter out at the Palomino Valley facility to protect the animals from the heat and sun. They also want the BLM to stop its roundups and use fertility control instead.

BLM officials say they're open to suggestions.

This facility can hold a maximum of 2,000 animals. And although they have rounded up fewer horses this year than in years past, they are nearing capacity.

"We are at a turning point in our program, and we are looking for ways to reform and better our program. Our biggest concern you know, is the horses," says Lisa Reid, BLM public affairs specialist.

One issue that both sides do agree on - they want the public to adopt the horses if they can.

The Palomino Valley facility is open to the public in case you're interested in adopting, or just checking it out.
