Someone 2 Know: DUI Victim Dancer

Posted: Updated:

During times of crisis, we often turn to something familiar for strength and hope. Alex Benavidez turned to dance. In July of 2012, he was hit by a drunk driver. "The airbag broke every bone in my face and I had to get three plates in it." Alex also says the impact from the car accident ruptured his spleen and intestines. It fractured his skull and caused a brain hemmorage as well. Although Alex does not remember the actual accident, first responders told him they almost lost him at the scene. "They got me stable on the way to the ER and then the next day I coded again and I was in a coma for three weeks."

Once Alex came out of his coma, he could not walk for weeks. The most frustrating thing for Alex was not being able to dance. Freestyle dance has long been his passion. "I was stuck in [the hospital] for a month and I remember I'd just listen to music and just picture dancing in my head. Once I was able to do it, it came to life."

Now, more than a year after the accident, Alex has made a remarkable recovery. He uses dance to escape some residual pain, but even more importantly, he says, he dances to spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Alex just released his first dance video, where he freestyles without his shirt on. "Ii have a crazy scar all the way down, so I dance with my shirt off and show my scar - proving that nothing can hold me back."
