Nevada Health Department Warns Public about Rim Fire Smoke

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection are warning Northern Nevadans affected by the smoke to watch if conditions worsen, and to take precautions when going out into the smoke.

Since Thursday, August 22nd, the air quality in the Reno, Carson, and Douglas areas has fluctuated between "unhealthy for sensitive groups," "unhealthy," "very unhealthy," and "hazardous." Officials say, regardless of your health or age, you should try to limit your exposure to the smoke or outside air. The smoke contains gasses and small particles that can hurt your eyes or affect your breathing.

If you have health-related questions about the smoke, you can call the Public Health Preparedness Program at: 775-684-5987.

You can also check the current outdoor air quality in Gardnerville and Carson City at and the outdoor air quality in Washoe County at
