Washoe County Sheriff's Office Joining Labor Day Weekend Enforcement

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office and several law enforcement agencies around the state are joining forces to reduce drunk driving this Labor Day weekend.

Deputies, police and state troopers will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers. Officials say if your weekend plans involve drinking, make sure to plan for a designated driver or make alternate transportation plans.

You can expect to see extra patrols on the road Friday through Monday.

Officials say 35 fatalities on Nevada roads so far this year were alcohol-related. They say nationally, someone dies every 51 minutes from an alcohol-related crash.

Deputies with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office released the following tips:

  • If you drink, don't drive. Designate a sober driver to get you home safely.
  • Plan a safe way home before going out.
  • If you're already impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, use public transportation or call a designated driver service to get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local police.
  • If you know people who are about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
