Fall Semester Begins at the University of Nevada

Posted: Updated:

Students at the University of Nevada celebrated the first day of classes with a "Kick Back with the Pack" welcome barbeque. UNR student Brian Kehoe stood in line for free hamburgers and chatted with friends.

"The first day of school is all about getting to class, getting your syllabus," Kehoe said. "Everybody's still in a good mood."

Sarah Byrnes is looking forward to taking advanced classes for her pre-law major.

"It's the first day of school, it's a good day to enjoy," Byrnes said. "It's beautiful out here, everybody's having a good time, we're playing music," said Byrnes. She was handing out fliers that show the student events happening this week.

Student leaders say events like this give students a chance to make new friends and get involved with the university. Associated Students of the University of Nevada President Ziad Rashdan says this week is important outside of class as well as inside the classroom.

"There are studies that prove that students who are engaged have higher retention rates, higher graduation rates, higher success rates through their academic career," said Rashdan.

Students we talked to believe their time here will lead to success later. Byrnes says things have changed for college students over the past ten years.

"I think the job market is a lot tougher now, getting into grad school, professional school, law school is a lot tougher," Byrnes said.

Rashdan agrees."It's now not only trying to find a job, it's trying to find a career. On top of that, finding a career that provides benefits including healthcare and retirement packages."

Classes at Truckee Meadows Community College began over the weekend and students are finding their way around, getting into the new school year on TMCC campuses as well. Most students who take on a college education hope the extra effort will eventually pay off, when they get out into the real world.

The welcome back events at UNR continue this week, with the annual painting of the Nevada "N" happening on Sunday.
