Firefighters Making Progress on American Fire

Posted: Updated:

The American Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe is now 88% contained.

The fire has burned 24,935 acres -- roughly 39 square miles -- since it started August 10th.

The cause of the American Fire remains under investigation.

Visitors to the Tahoe National Forest are being asked to adhere to area and road closures that are currently in place. These closures are meant to protect visitors and fire fighters. The roads and areas that have been closed are unsafe due to fire-weakened, burned trees that pose a risk of falling, as well as frequently heavy smoke making visibility extremely poor.

Those affected areas and roads will be re-opened as soon as possible.
