High Tech Equipment Measures Air Quality Level

Posted: Updated:

You don't have to be an expert to know that when the air looks as thick as it does right now in the Truckee Meadows, particulate pollution is high. But it takes some very sophisticated equipment to decipher just how unhealthy it is. And eight measuring stations around the area are doing just that. Hourly.

"We are getting a lot of calls into the Health District right now. A lot of interest and a lot of questions, which is good," says Dan Inouye with Air Quality. "The biggest part of this smoke is made up of the smallest particulates. They get past our normal defense systems and get deep down into our lungs."

And he says face masks don't really help. The best bet is to stay out of the smoke if it bothers you.

The Health District is posting hourly readings at www.ourcleanair.com. Links to Facebook and Twitter are also located on that page as well. Air Now is updating every hour.

Douglas County Emergency Management and The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection are continuing to monitor air quality concerns from smoky conditions drifting into the valley there. NDEP air quality monitors in Gardnerville and Carson City indicates extremely elevated amounts of particulate matters in the air. Based on National Weather Service forecasts, NDEP expects very unhealthy air quality conditions to remain in Carson City and Douglas County throughout the weekend.
