California Girl Says She Texted Abductor About a Ride

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year-old girl in California is clarifying some details today about her relationship with the family friend who authorities say killed the girl's mother and 8-year-old brother before abducting the teen.

Search warrants in the case had said that Hannah Anderson exchanged about 13 phone calls with James DiMaggio before she was picked up from cheerleading practice that day. But Anderson tells NBC's "Today" show that the communications were texts, not phone calls, and that she was telling DiMaggio where to pick her up from practice.

She also says the letters that she sent to DiMaggio, which were found in his home, had been written about a year ago when she was having trouble getting along with her mother and she sought advice from him.

Authorities have said Anderson was kidnapped by DiMaggio, a family friend, after the killings at his rural house east of San Diego. DiMaggio was killed days later in a shootout with authorities in Idaho.

Today's interview provided no details about what happened after DiMaggio kidnapped her -- including whether he told her that her mother and brother were killed or whether she tried to escape. San Diego County's sheriff has said the teen didn't know about the deaths until she was rescued.   (AP)
