American Fire Spreads, More Smoke Filling Truckee Meadows

Posted: Updated:

The US Forest Service reports that the American Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe has spread to 13,750 acres, and a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the next few days.

Once again, the fire is sending thick smoke into the Truckee Meadows. Officials with Sierra Front say the smoke is not coming from a new fire.

No populated areas are threatened by the fire, which is currently 49% contained. Firefighters say the fire is active, moves quickly and is difficult to fight because of steep terrain and heavy smoke. The fire is currently being fought by 1,430 personnel using 48 fire engines, 19 bulldozers and 12 helicopters.

Officials say thunderstorms are predicted in the area over the next few days, and may make the fire more difficult to fight as lightning sparks up more fires.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued starting the morning of Monday, August 19th and running through Wednesday evening.

The Tahoe National Forest has also issued a closure order for the fire area. The full closure order can be found at http://tinyurl.com/mvx4w3c.

In addition, the Placer County Sheriff has closed Foresthill Divide road after the turnoff to Christmas Tree Lodge, northeast of Foresthill.

Officials also warn that air quality has been affected in a wide area surrounding the fire, and are asking citizens to be aware of the air quality changes, and take appropriate precaution.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
