New Truckee River Restoration Project Starts

Posted: Updated:

NV Energy and the Nature Conservancy have announced the start of new restoration work along the Truckee River east of Sparks.

The power company and the non-profit are collaborating to prevent flooding and erosion along the river by removing earth and rerouting it so that it flows more like it was in its natural state near the Tracy generating station.

NV Energy has donated access and part of their land to help with the project.

"It really protects the health of the community, protects different areas from flooding. We have a highway nearby so it ensures we don't have any issues with that structure, and it provides just a more natural path for the river," says Mary Simmons, Vice President of External Affairs, NV Energy.

The restoration work will also involve planting trees that have been removed from the river due to development.

This is the fifth restoration project the conservancy has done on the lower Truckee.

The entire project should take about four years to complete.
