SonoCine - KTVN Channel 2 - Reno Tahoe News Weather, Video -

I'm sharing my mom's story in the hopes of helping other women beat breast cancer. I recently shot a video that will be played at the National Women's Survivors Convention. The brain child of the convention is Judy Pearson and Karen Shayne. Both are cancer survivors. The goal of the convention is to help women be better survivors. "Take their survivorship to another level," says Shayne.

The video explains the SonoCine technology. Creator, Dr. Kevin Kelly, headquartered the company here in Reno. He's a breast radiologist with 34 years experience. He saw too many cancers being missed on mammography in women with dense breast tissue. "Probably 2 to 3 times a month I would see a woman come in who had a recent mammogram and a lump and I said there's a better way to do this."

SonoCine is an automated whole breast ultrasound movie of breast tissue. It targets women with dense breast tissue. 40 percent of women have this type of tissue. It can hide tumors on a mammogram. Plus, simply having dense breast tissue increases your chances of getting breast cancer. Karen just had her first SonoCine. "I know now what dense breast tissue really means. What dense breast tissue really looks like and now I can take control of my health a little bit more.

This video will debut at the National Women's Survivors Convention coming up on August 22nd through the 24th in Nashville, Tennessee. Judy calls it the second act. "Where 750 women actually are coming to be educated and motivated and to learn new life applications for continuing forward in their survivorship."
