Back-to-School Health Fair Brings Hundreds To Outlets at Sparks

Posted: Updated:

A health fair in Sparks features many things that can help kids get ready for the first day of school.

This weekend, Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center is putting on the "Live Well, Be Healthy, Get Active" back-to-school health fair at the Outlets at Sparks. Organizers say it educates families on what they need to do during the school year.

"How to keep the germ bugs away," said Jamii Uboldi, Marketing Manager with Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center. "How to stay away from the flu, and really, how to take care of themselves. It's a stressful time of the year, but it's really important for them to understand the very basics in health and wellness."

The fair offers information on many health-related topics, including how to eat healthy and staying active. There's also demonstrations on things like the effects of tobacco use and how to perform C.P.R.

There was also a huge line Saturday for a free immunization clinic that did not require insurance.

"For us, making sure that kids are up-to-date before they start not only keeps them healthy, but it also allows them to enroll," said Heidi Parker, Executive Director of Immunize Nevada. "If they're not up-to-date, they can be excluded."

Parker says this clinic was very important for many of the families.

"Most of them don't have insurance, have low access," she said. "They don't have a provider, and they have a difficult time finding a provider to help them with immunizations."

The immunizations were only offered on Saturday. If you missed the clinic, you can find more information on future events at:

The health fair itself continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
