Two Wild Horse Gatherings Planned This Week

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Bureau of Land Management has announced two wild horse gatherings that will start up over the next few days.

The first will be a wild horse water trap beginning Thursday at Cherry Spring near Elko. Officials say the natural water flow can support about 20 wild horses, but that currently there are over 80 using it.

Those horses will be contained in new corrals nearby at the Maverick-Medicine Herd Management area.

A Wild Horse Gather Information Line has been established for this gather at (775) 861-6700. A recorded message will provide information on daily gather activities and updated gather schedules. The BLM will also post daily gather reports on its website at: http://bit.ly/MavMedGather

The second emergency gather begins on the Friday outside Lovelock.

Officials say they will be capturing 200 wild horses from the Blue Wing area. The gather will take about 8 days and be done by helicopter.

The gathered wild horses will be transported to the Palomino Valley Wild Horse and Burro Center near Reno where they will be prepared for the BLM adoption program.
