Testimony Underway in Gonzalez Murder Trial

Posted: Updated:

Testimony is now underway in the murder trial of Ernesto Gonzalez who's accused of killing San Jose Hells Angel chapter president Jeffrey ‘Jethro' Pettigrew.

Gonzalez faces several charges, including first degree murder and discharging a firearm in a structure during a fight at Trader Dick's inside John Ascuaga's Nugget on September 23, 2011.

Defense lawyer David Houston said Gonzalez shot Pettigrew because he feared Pettigrew was kicking another Vagos to death during the melee.

Houston says the surveillance video prosecutors say proves Gonzalez carried out the hit will actually show he tried to shy away from the trouble started by another loud-mouthed Vagos.

Houston says that Vagos, Gary "Jabbers" Rudnick, lied about the assassination plan to get a plea-bargain deal he thought would keep him out of prison.

Gonzalez is the of the Vagos chapter in Nicaragua.

Three witnesses took the stand today. The first was a woman who took numerous 911 calls that were played in court. The other two worked security and surveillance for the Nugget.

Monday, Hells Angels member Cesar Villagrana changed his plea in connection with the shooting which happened during Street Vibrations.

Villagrana pleaded guilty to a challenge to fight and battery charges and faces up to 15 years in prison and a possible $15,000 fine when he is sentenced September 4th.

Villagrana originally pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and conspiracy charges.

Silver and blue dominated the stands as crowds demonstrated school spirit for Wolf Pack Night.  There was a two-way tie for first place in bareback bronc riding with Wyatt Bloom from Bend, OR and Mason Clements from Mullen, UT both scoring an 83.5. This is great news for Clements, who was looking to redeem himself after a zero-score last night. Shorty Garrett from Eagle Butte, SD also found redemption from a zero-score by snagging the top spot with a 78 in saddle bronc.
