Man Dead After Plane Crashes Near Lake Tahoe Airport

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say a man is dead after a small plane crashed in a wooded area near Lake Tahoe Airport Monday morning.

Authorities say the single-engine Mooney M20 crashed in a wooded area around 11:15am after taking off from the airport. It crashed 3/4 mile east of the airport.

Authorities say the plane was carrying a couple from Palo Alto, Steven and Karen Lefton. The 67-year-old pilot, Steven died at the scene, while his wife, was cut from the wreckage and then transported by CalStar air ambulance to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with moderate injuries.

Deputies say a woman - who works as a nurse for CalStar - heard the crash ran to the scene to give aid and called for help. "She was able to call her husband who was an on duty deputy with our department and he was able to get her GPS coordinates to her," says Lt. Pete Van Arnum.

Deputies say the fire department sprayed down the fuel around the wreckage to prevent any fires.

The FAA and NTSB will now investigate the accident.
