Primetime Emmy Nominations Announced

Posted: Updated:

The 2013 Primetime Emmy Nominations were announced Thursday morning and Netflix made history with one.

The political intrigue saga received a best drama series nomination Thursday. It's the first top Emmy nod for a program delivered online, not on TV. The series received a total of nine bids, including acting nominations for stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

The most Emmy nominations, 17, went to "American Horror Story: Asylum." Close behind was "Game of Thrones" with 16 nods, while "Saturday Night Live" and the Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" earned 15 nominations each.

Netflix series "Arrested Development" missed out on a best comedy nomination, but Jason Bateman was nominated for his acting. If Mad Men wins its fifth best drama award, it'll break the record held by "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law" and "The West Wing." "Modern Family" will try for its third straight best comedy award. Its competition is "The Big Bang Theory," "Girls," "Louie," "30 Rock," and "Veep."

Nominees for best actor in a TV drama are: Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"; Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad"; Jeff Daniels, "The Newsroom"; Jon Hamm, "Mad Men"; Damian Lewis, "Homeland"; Kevin Spacey, "House of Cards."

Nominees for best actress in a TV drama are: Connie Britton, "Nashville"; Claire Danes, "Homeland"; Michelle Dockery, "Downton Abbey"; Vera Farmiga, "Bates Motel"; Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men"; Kerry Washington, "Scandal"; Robin Wright, "House of Cards."

Heidi Klum will try to end her 12-time losing streak. She's up for best host of a reality show, along with her "Project Runway" co-host Tim Gunn. Her competition is Ryan Seacrest for "American Idol," Tom Bergeron for "Dancing With the Stars," Betty White for "Off Their Rockers," Cat Deeley for "So You Think You Can Dance" and Anthony Bourdain for "The Taste."

Is this the year "American Idol" finally wins its first Emmy for best reality show? It's up against "The Amazing Race," "The Voice," "Dancing With the Stars," "Project Runway," "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Top Chef." "The Amazing Race has won this award nine times.

"Saturday Night Live" has added to its record for most Emmy nominations for a program. It picked up another 15, for a total of 171. Justin Timberlake, Louis C.K., Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig are all nominated for hosting. Timberlake has already won four Emmys for his appearances on SNL. Wiig has never won. Bill Hader is up for the characters he plays on the show. Former SNL cast members Will Forte and Molly Shannon are nominated, Forte for his guest shot on "30 Rock" and Shannon for her guest-starring role on "Enlightened."

Other nominees include Michael Douglas and Matt Damon for their Liberace movie.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sept. 22 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and airing live on CBS.
