Nevada Jobless Rate Ticks Up to 9.6% in June

Posted: Updated:

Nevada's unemployment rate ticked up in June to 9.6% despite better than expected job growth.

A report Thursday by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says the June jobless rate is up from 9.5% in May but well below the 11.4% jobless rate a year ago.

Las Vegas had an unemployment rate of 10.1% in June, up from 9.3% the previous month. Carson City's rate also climbed to 10.1% from 9.5% in May.

The Reno-Sparks area saw the jobless rate increase by half a percentage point to 9.8%.

Economist Bill Anderson says the increases are seasonal in nature and were to be expected.

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement regarding the Nevada unemployment figures released earlier today:

"Reports of better-than-expected job gains are certainly welcome, but unfortunately the unemployment rate has increased yet again. The fact remains that Nevada's unemployment rate continues to hover above the national average, a pattern that has lasted far too long. Republicans and Democrats alike can agree that much more needs to be done. Today, I attended a No Labels event where Members from both parties rallied behind the need to make government work better for the American people, and that includes improving our economy," said Senator Dean Heller.
