With a sneak peek at an exhibit honoring Western explorer John C. Fremont, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will celebrate free admission day from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

"We're back with a bang, so to speak," said Jim Barmore, director of the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.  The days of operation for state museums had been cut back during the recession. In Carson City, the museum is now open every day except Monday. As they prepare for Nevada Day 2014, and the kickoff of the one-year observance of NV150, the state's 150th birthday celebration, the museum is preparing a collection of items connected to Fremont's exploration of Nevada Territory into California.

"Starting July 20, we will have a sneak preview of the Fremont cannon before the bigger exhibition opens on Nevada Day," Barmore said. "Visitors can see Fremont's cannon as it appeared on the 1843-44 Fremont expedition before it was abandoned in nearby West Walker River Canyon. No, we can't shoot it off. You won't really hear a big bang.  But, you'll see something special."

Statewide, museum visitors are invited to rediscover their Nevada museums for free all day July 20 and enjoy train rides at Nevada State Railroad Museums in Carson and Boulder City at half-price.

"Some experts contend the museum's cannon is the original Fremont cannon. Others question. Regardless, this is a special occasion, offered for a limited time," Barmore said.

The cannon and carriage will appear in the museum's Dema Guinn Concourse until August 10 and will re-appear the end of October for "Finding Fremont: Pathfinder of the West."

Nevada State Museum is at 600 N. Carson Street.
