New Cafe Opens with Help of Other Small Business Owners

Posted: Updated:

Thanks to some local business owners with big hearts, there's a new restaurant in town called Cafe DeLuxe.

Tuesday, was the cafe's grand opening.

What's unique about this new restaurant is some of the money actually came from other small business owners in the area. Last year, the Reno Rebuild Project was started by local business owners to help small ma and pa stores.

So, here's how it works.

Business owners put aside a nickel from the sales of all their items from the past year for the Reno Rebuild Project. They came up with $20,000 for a loan to give to one lucky new business owner. Barrie Schuster of Cafe DeLuxe was the lucky one this year. "That helped me so much because I was at a point where I was exhausting my reserves," said Schuster. "It allowed me to continue to push forward."

The rebuild loans are low interest, short-term loans. All the money paid back will go back into the Reno Rebuild Project for future businesses.

Cafe DeLuxe is a natural foods restaurant.

Schuster said the focus is to provide a place with healthy options. She said the eggs, bacon and sausage come from local farms. She says the bacon and sausage are certified humane.

So far, customers love it.

"So I thought I'd come in and try lunch," said John Stieger. "I had a phenomenal sandwich, it tasted excellent. It was healthy and I just feel good because I ate such a healthy meal. The cafe has such an incredible ambiance, photos on the wall, in this old, historic building. It's just a fantastic atmosphere."

Cafe DeLuxe is located at 1690 South Wells Avenue in Reno.
