Gov. Sandoval Speaks With Energy Secretary

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Brian Sandoval spoke with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz on Thursday about Department of Energy activities in Nevada.

Sandoval spoke with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz about Department of Energy activities in Nevada, including plans to ship canisters of radioactive waste to a site northwest of Las Vegas.

Sandoval had sent two letters to Moniz requesting a meeting. When his first letter in June failed to bring a response, he sent another last week.

The DOE is proposing to ship 403 canisters of radioactive waste from Oak Ridge, Tenn., to the Nevada National Security Site for burial in a shallow pit. Sandoval says the former national nuclear proving ground isn't appropriate for disposal of highly radioactive waste that could be used to build a "dirty bomb." (AP)

Governor Brian Sandoval today made the following statement after speaking with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz:

"This afternoon, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Dr. Ernest Moniz and I had a frank and blunt conversation about the proposed U-233 shipments to Nevada.   While we agreed to disagree on specific points, we committed to having a continued open dialogue and further discussions on this important matter.  I thank the Secretary for taking the time to speak with me today, and look forward to working toward a solution."
