Wildfire Near Las Vegas Now 80% Contained

Posted: Updated:

A sweeping wildfire that threatened mountain homes near Las Vegas is 80% contained, and fire officials are preparing to let residents return to neighborhoods evacuated 11 days ago.

Fire spokesman Larry Helmerick says crews are working Tuesday to snuff out hot spots in Kyle Canyon where people are due to be allowed back in on Wednesday.

The area will remain closed to the public until later this week.

More than 800 personnel are still working the 43.6-square-mile Carpenter 1 blaze. It was sparked by lightning July 1.

The spread has stopped, with no new injuries reported and no new structures threatened.

One person was hurt a week ago, the same day six structures were destroyed in Prospect Springs.

Helmerick says the firefighting effort has cost $16.5 million.  (AP)
