Artown Hits Halfway Point

Posted: Updated:

Artown is halfway through for this year and going strong.

"We won't have actual numbers until the end of the month when we add them up, but eyeballing the attendance at the events shows us the events are packed and it looks like our attendance will be about what it was last year, which was 300,000 attendees," says Artown Executive Director, Beth Macmillan.

This year there are 500 events on the schedule of Artown events. With half done and another half to go, Macmillan says Artown has really hit its stride. A series of Artown concerts and events throughout the year are ticketed and help keep as many of the events during July free. It's a good formula to fund the event and to keep people engaged.

"Not only have we figured out how to do Artown," Macmillan says, "but the community has figured it out too. They know what to bring and when to show up to get the most out of the events on the calendar."

A new seating situation at Wingfield Park and a constant line-up of events at the other venues have the city filled with music and visual arts. She says the neighborhood art shows in Old Southwest Reno over the weekend have really taken off.

And she's already looking past the next two weeks.

"We're already thinking about what kind of events we'll have in December to make this a continuing success next year!"

Tonight's Family Festival and Family Series will feature beloved clown, the "Unique Derique." He has been clowning around and making audiences laugh for decades. He will perform at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno from 7pm to 8pm.

The Family Festival kicks off at 5pm with face painting, and games.

Channel 2 News is a proud sponsor of this event.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will play 7:30pm-9:30pm at Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater located at 6000 Bartley Ranch Road. The concert is free to the public.
