Pakistani Teenager Shot by Taliban Speaks at UN

Posted: Updated:

The Pakistani teenager shot in the head by the Taliban made her first public appearance Friday at the United Nations in New York City.

Malala Yousafzai addressed more than 500 young leaders at a Youth Assembly. Our Jennifer Burton and her daughter, Amanda attended that presentation. (Photos at right were taken by them.)

Yousafzai promoted education for girls. She presented a petition with more than 330,000 signatures all supporting universal education by December 2015.

Yousafzai returned to school in March after getting medical treatment in Britain. She was targeted because she spoke out for the right of Pakistani girls to go to school.

The U.N. has declared July 12th – her 16th birthday – as ‘Malala Day.'

The U.N. says some 57 million children worldwide do not attend primary school.

You can watch portions of Jennifer Burton's report tonight and Monday during Channel 2 News at 5pm.
