Fire Departments Hold Free Smoke Alarm Installation

Posted: Updated:

The Sparks Fire Department is focusing on safety with the third year of their "Project Safe" program.

Through Project Safe, firefighters visit some of the older homes in Sparks to make sure that they're equipped with smoke alarms.

The Sparks Fire marshal tells us that it's a simple concept but it definitely saves lives.

"We had a kind of pretty devastating fire a few years ago that, we found that there just weren't enough smoke alarms in the house, and we think maybe it could have notified the occupants if we'd had them," says Bob King.

The Sparks Fire Department uses grant money to buy smoke alarms and installation equipment so they can put them in peoples' homes for free.

Over the last three years crews have installed nearly 2,000 alarms in about 1,000 homes.

And King says they work.

Since they started the program, he says they've already had their smoke alarms save lives in two different incidents.

"It's a very good, life-saving program for the community, and we want people to call."

So, if you live in Sparks and want to enroll in the program, all you have to do is call the Sparks Fire Department at 353-2266.

Once again - it is completely free.

And there is a similar program in Reno-- for low-income seniors who need smoke alarms.

You'll want to hurry, because the enrollment period for this year ends on Monday.
