Our area blood bank is replenishing its stock of life-saving blood -- thanks to you, our viewers.
We held our 6th Annual 'Give 2 Live' Blood Drive inside the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa on Thursday.
We collected 215 units of blood - nearly 50 more units than last year!
Everyone had a different reason for donating their time – and blood today.
Here are just a few that we heard.
"It feels good, like you're doing a good deed without any effort. It's simple," Linda Stetzell told us.
Phil Collignon said, "So I can save a life or two or three. I don't have money, but I have blood."
Frank Shields added, "It's easy for me. Some people have trouble giving, so that's why you don't have everybody doing it."
One lady didn't realize she could donate until recently because she has Type 1 diabetes. "If I can do something small, because there are a lot of restrictions with my diabetes, so I might as well do what I can," says Amber Schuster.
"Especially the deal with the baby you showed on the news yesterday and then I didn't know about your husband until I donated last year."
Kristen Remington's husband, Leonard, also came out to show his support. While he, like many cancer survivors, cannot give blood, he can give thanks. That's exactly what he did – because now – exactly one year after finishing treatment, he's able to shake hands with the very people who helped get him through treatment for leukemia. "You never know when you're going to need blood and obviously we were put into a situation and folks like these people - they saved my life. So I just wanted to give thanks and shake their hands and encourage people to come down because they really are saving lives."
If you missed today's event and still want to donate, call United Blood Services at 324-6454 to set up an appointment.
On behalf of all the recipients and their families thank you to all our donors and we'll see you next year!
