Volunteers Needed in Reno's Rose Garden

Posted: Updated:

There are some 1,100 rose bushes in Reno's Municipal Rose Garden. And due to budget cuts, there is one full-time person pruning them, weeding them and caring for them. Dianne Stortz-Lintz has been doing that for nine years. But up until now she's had help.

"The budget cuts are in every department," she says. "But Parks and Rec is down to two-thirds of what it used to be. I used to have two full time people and 3 or 4 seasonal workers in the summer to keep up and now it's me. That's it!"

She also is used to having a force of volunteers to help her. But she says they have faded away for whatever reason.

"They lose interest and some are older and can't really do this any more. A big influx of volunteers would be very nice right now," she says.

She's actively recruiting. She's holding workshops for volunteers and happy to help you with your own plants if you can help her with the planting and the weeding. And once you're registered you can weed and prune on your own time.

You can find Dianne Stortz-Lintz at www.Reno.gov  and you can contact her directly at (775) 657-4616
